Your first freshwater aquarium
A beautiful aquarium begins before the first fish arrives. Take time to plan the space, equipment and routine that will support it.
Choose the right place
Pick a level, stable surface designed for the full weight of a filled aquarium. Avoid direct sunlight, busy walkways and places with large temperature changes. Leave space to reach the filter and carry out maintenance.
Plan the complete setup
Choose a filter suited to the aquarium, a heater when your livestock requires one, suitable lighting, water conditioner and a test kit. Match substrate and hardscape to the fish and plants you intend to keep.
Establish the aquarium first
An aquarium needs a working biological filter before it can safely support livestock. Use a reliable cycling method and test the water rather than relying on a fixed number of days. Ammonia and nitrite must be controlled before introducing fish.
Stock slowly and thoughtfully
Research adult size, social needs and compatibility. Add livestock gradually, acclimate appropriately and monitor the water. A modest stocking level is easier to maintain than an overcrowded aquarium.
Build a routine
Keep a simple record of water tests, maintenance and livestock changes. Ask for help when something seems unusual instead of adding treatments without identifying the problem.
