A greener underwater world
The right plants add texture, shelter and a sense of place. Choose them around your actual lighting and maintenance routine.
Start with your equipment
A plant’s success depends on lighting, nutrients, water conditions and sometimes supplementary CO2. Choose species that suit the equipment you have rather than the photograph alone.
Understand how plants grow
Rhizome plants such as Java fern and Anubias are usually attached to hardscape with their rhizomes exposed. Rooted plants may need a suitable substrate. Ask how each plant should be installed.
Create layers
Use smaller plants toward the front and taller growth at the back, while preserving swimming space. Leave room for mature growth instead of packing every gap immediately.
Give plants time
New plants may shed some old leaves while adjusting. Remove decaying material and monitor new growth. Change lighting and fertilisation gradually, based on the needs of your setup.
